FMH Blood Bank Lahore delivers 24 hour blood banking service. It is attached to a 500 bedded tertiary care hospital. The annual workload exceeds a turnover of 8000+ units of blood and blood products. It provides Donor Counselling, recruitment and screening facilities, cross matching, Mega unit Platelet Concentrates, Washed Pack Red Cells and Paediatric blood units etc. Whole blood is separated into Pack Red Cells, Plasma and Platelet Concentrate.

  • Three to four packs to provide small volume red cell transfusions for top-up only, to avoid multiple donors.

Washed Cellular Components (red cells or platelets) In patients who develop antibodies and react to plasma constituents of transfused blood (e.g. Anti-IgA)
  • Red cells / platelet apheresis from a single donation centrifuged free of plasma and resuspended in saline.
  • PCV of 0.65-0.75%.
  • Residual protein < 0.5 g per unit.
  • To be used within 24 hours from the time of preparation.

Platelet Apheresis Donation or mega unit platelet concentrate For prevention or management of bleeding due to thrombocytopenia or platelet function defect
  • Platelet content > 240 x 109/ bag.
  • Shelf-life 5 days at +22ᵒ C with continual agitation.
  • DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
Platelet Concentrate prepared from a unit of blood For prevention or management of bleeding due to thrombocytopenia or platelet function defect
  • A pool derived from 4 buffy coats contained in a volume of up to 300ml of plasma.
  • Platelet content of each pool > 240 x 109/ bag.
  • Shelf-life 5 days at +22ᵒ C with continual agitation.
  • DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) Deficiency of multiple coagulation factors and for Plasma exchange in TTP/HUS
  • Each bag contains approx. 220ml plasma from whole blood separated and frozen within 6 hours of collection.
  • Shelf-life 24 months at -30ᵒ C.
  • USE IMMEDIATELY, after thawing.
Cryoprecipitate Fibrinogen Deficiency, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, Massive blood transfusion
  • Shelf-life 24 months at -30ᵒ C.
  • USE IMMEDIATELY after thawing.

  • Donor Screening by ELISA for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Blood is also screened for malaria and syphilis.
