When should I see a cardiologist?+

What happens during a first cardiology appointment at FMH?+
Your first visit includes a detailed history and physical examination by the consultant cardiologist, an ECG, and depending on your symptoms, additional tests such as an echocardiogram or Holter monitor may be arranged. What is an echocardiogram and does it hurt?+
An echocardiogram is a painless ultrasound scan of the heart. A probe is placed on your chest and uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart's chambers, valves, and pumping function. It takes around 30–45 minutes, requires no preparation, and has no side effects. It is the most informative non-invasive cardiac test available.
Can I get a cardiac risk assessment even if I have no symptoms?+
Yes — and it is strongly recommended if you have any risk factors. A cardiac risk assessment at FMH includes a detailed consultation, resting ECG, blood pressure check, and review of your lipid profile and blood sugar. Based on findings, the cardiologist will provide a personalised prevention plan. This is especially important for anyone over 40 with a family history of heart disease.
What is the difference between a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon?+
A cardiologist diagnoses and treats heart conditions using medications and minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty and stenting. A cardiac surgeon performs open-heart operations such as bypass surgery. Most heart patients are managed entirely by a cardiologist. Surgery is only required in specific complex cases and is always discussed with the patient in advance.
How do I get my previous cardiac reports reviewed at FMH?+

What is Primary PCI and when is it needed?+
Primary PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) is an emergency angioplasty performed when a heart attack occurs. It involves opening the blocked coronary artery using a balloon catheter and placing a stent to restore blood flow. It is the gold-standard treatment and time-critical — the sooner it is performed, the better the outcome. Call emergency services immediately if you suspect a heart attack.
What is the difference between angiography and angioplasty?+
Coronary angiography is a diagnostic procedure — dye is injected and X-ray imaging is used to visualise blockages in the coronary arteries. Angioplasty is a treatment — a balloon opens the blocked artery, often followed by stent placement. Angiography is typically the first step that determines whether angioplasty is required.
Is the CATH Lab available for emergencies at night and on weekends?+
Yes. The FMH CATH Lab operates on a 24/7 on-call basis for emergency interventions including Primary PCI. The cardiac team maintains round-the-clock readiness for acute coronary syndromes and heart attacks, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
How long does an angioplasty procedure take and what is the recovery like?+
Most angioplasty procedures take between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on complexity. Patients are typically observed in the CCU for 24–48 hours post-procedure. Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days and can resume light activity within a week. A follow-up appointment is arranged within 4–6 weeks to review recovery and optimise medications.

What should I bring to my cardiology appointment?+
Bring your CNIC or identification, any previous ECGs, echo reports, or cardiac investigations, a list of current medications, your referral letter if you have one, and your insurance card if applicable. If you have a history of cardiac procedures such as stenting or previous angiography, bring those reports as well.
What is Holter monitoring and how do I prepare for it?+
Holter monitoring is a 24–48 hour ambulatory ECG where a small wearable device records your heart's electrical activity continuously. No special preparation is needed. You will be asked to avoid bathing during the test and to keep a diary of symptoms. The device is fitted in the clinic and returned the following day for analysis and reporting by the cardiologist.
