(Lahore, 10th August, 2019): In accordance with World Hepatitis Day, the Department of Gastroenterology-Hepatology held an interactive workshop at Fatima Memorial Hospital College of Medicine and Dentistry on 10th August, 2019. Members of the panel were experts in their fields namely Prof. Altaf Alam, Prof. Arif Amir Nawaz, Prof. Afshan Ambreen, Prof. Rubina Iqbal, Dr. Aftab Alvi and Dr. Bushra Ali. The workshop was case based where the residents and registrar of Gastroenterology department presented real life cases of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis E. It was an interactive session and several attendees had pertinent questions to ask. The prevention and treatment of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis E during pregnancy were discussed in detail. Participants from government and private hospitals shared their experiences regarding different etiologies of hepatitis in pregnancy and relevant management. It was concluded that since Pakistan is an endemic area for hepatitis B and C, it is important for everyone looking after these patients to understand how transmission of these deadly viruses from mother to child can be prevented. Hepatitis E is a cause of liver failure and mortality amongst pregnant women. Prevention and timely intervention can help save lives. On the whole, it was a good learning exercise for gynecologists, gastroenterologists and medical specialists who were of the opinion that such workshops should be held more frequently and for a wider audience also.
