(Lahore, 8 May 2019): World Ovarian Cancer Day is observed on May 8 since 2013. The purpose to observe this day is to spread awareness about the risks, symptoms and screening of ovarian cancer.

Gynaecology Department of Fatima Memorial Hospital observed World Ovarian Cancer Day to educate women and their communities about the risks, symptoms and screening of ovarian cancer.

Prof. Dr.Saulat Siddique, Hospital Director, Dr. Zafar Allauddin, Prof. Fouzia Monoo Khan and Dr. Samina Khurshid, were present on the occasion. The event consisted of informative lectures, presentation and Questions & Answers session.

Every year about 2,50,000 women around the world are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 140,000 women die of it, making it the cancer for women with the lowest survival rate. Due to a widespread lack of awareness and the absence of early screening tests many cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed late. It is estimated that only 45% of women with ovarian cancer survive for more than five years. About 89% of breast cancer patients survive for five or more years.

Ovarian cancer is treatable when diagnosed at early stages. The treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or targeted therapy. The kind of treatment depends on many factors, including the type of ovarian cancer, its stage and grade, as well as the general health of the patient.
