Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit

The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Department of Obstetrics-Gynaecology at Fatima Memorial Hospital has been set up with the aim of providing premier comprehensive patient-focused healthcare to women experiencing complicated pregnancies in a collaborative setting with our colleagues in multiple other disciplines including genetics, pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, neonatologists and intensivists.

The unit is taking the initiative in baby steps with the vision to eventually develop into a modern Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) unit and a referral center in near future.

Currently we are offering the following services:

  • Antenatal care for:
    • High risk pregnancies
    • Pregnancies with fetal anomalies
    • Medical disorders in pregnancy
    • Multiple pregnancies (twins/triplets)
    • Fetal growth abnormalities
  • Combined clinics with medical genetics & pediatric surgery
  • Level II & III ultrasound
    • NT Scan/Doppler Scan/Fetal surveillance scan
  • Prenatal invasive procedures
    • Chorionic villous sampling
    • Amniocentesis
    • Cordocentesis/Cardiocentesis
    • Fetal blood sampling/Intrauterine blood transfusion
  • Preconception counseling
    • Repeated abortions or deaths in pregnancies
    • Previous preterm birth

High Risk Obstetric Clinic & Combined Diabetic Clinic

We provide care for women who have pregnancy complications and are going through high-risk pregnancy. A pregnancy may be considered high-risk if the pregnant woman:

  • is 35-years or older or teenager
  • was underweight or overweight before she became pregnant
  • is carrying more than one fetus (multiples)
  • has gone into premature labour
  • has previously had a premature baby
  • has previously had a baby with a birth defect
  • patient/couple with thalassemia
  • patient with recurrent miscarriages
  • has gestational diabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or another longstanding medical problem

A High Risk Clinic and a Combined Diabetic Clinic are held every Saturday from 8:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. to cater needs of High Risk woman.
