
RHEUMATOLOGY
Rheumatology is the specialty of medicine that cares for people with rheumatic and inflammatory diseases that affect the joints and connective tissues. Systemic autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis and myositis are common enough and affect the lives of millions of people in Pakistan.
Clinical Services:
The Department of Rheumatology at FMH provides secondary and tertiary referral care for local, regional and national patients in an outpatient and inpatient setting. We see patients with a wide range of general and specialised Rheumatology conditions.
We provide a range of Rheumatology services for the management and treatment of Rheumatologic conditions. For example,
- Early Arthritis diagnosis and management
- Osteoporosis screening and management
- Treatment programmes for:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis,
- Psoriatic arthritis,
- Ankylosing Spondylitis,
- Polymyalgia rheumatica,
- Gout,
- Osteoarthritis,
- Lupus and other connective tissue disorders,
- Vasculitis,
- Fibromyalgia ,
- soft tissue rheumatism and pain disorders,
- Nerve pain, neck pain, back pain,
- And many other musculoskeletal disorders
Rheumatologic services offered at FMH include:
- Outpatient consultations
- Outpatient specialty care for patients with chronic rheumatic diseases
- Hospital consultations
- Diagnostic and therapeutic intra-articular and soft tissue injections and aspirations
- Education on rheumatologic diseases and treatments
- Clinical trials
Education and Training:
The Rheumatology Department runs several education programmes for doctors. We are affiliated with FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry. There is a major emphasis on educating undergraduates and postgraduate students. There are daily teaching sessions for medical students and special thanks to patients who give their time to help educate these young doctors. Moreover, specialist trainee doctors from across the Pakistan (from all provinces) join our department to get higher specialist training in rheumatology. There are almost daily teaching sessions organised for these rheumatology trainee fellows.

Our research programmes ensure that Department of Rheumatology is a leader in future innovations and developments which improve patient care.
